Special Projects

Special Projects runs several strands of Cywaith Cymru's work which fall beyond the remit of either Commissions or Residencies, though sometimes they include elements of these. There has been a programme of discursive seminars; What Artists' Need, and regular evening seminars, events and exhibitions are held at Cywaith Cymru's exhibiting space in Crichton House. These projects are initiated from within Cywaith Cymru itself and form part of ongoing research and dissemination, a function which helps formulate strategies for the future.

GROUNDBREAKING: THE ARTIST IN THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE was launched in December. A co-production between Cywaith Cymru and Seren Books of Bridgend, edited by Iwan Bala, this handsomely illustrated compilation of essays on various aspects of Cywaith Cymru's work for twenty years and more, throws considerable light onto the history and development of Public Art in Wales. It is available from Seren Books at £19.95 plus post and packaging, or from selected bookshops throughout Wales and beyond.

GROUNDBREAKING: THE ARTIST IN THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE establishes a context from which to discuss past, present and future developments in public art in Wales and contains essays from a diverse range of writers, including our former Director, Tamara Krikorian, Co-Director & Head of Residencies, Stephen West and Project Manager, Simon Fenhoulet. Other contributers are: Hugh Adams, Shelagh Hourahane, John Gingell, Peter Lord and Robin Campbell. The book is edited by Special Projects Manager, Iwan Bala.

ART IN THE SENEDD
An exhibition of drawings, models and photographs related to the Art at the Senedd commissions is being held at Cywaith Cymru. On March 16th, a presentation by Tamara Krikorian follows a series of tours of the artworks in the new Richard Rogers designed Assembly building. The work of Richard Harris, Martin Richman, Alexander Beleschenko and Danny Lane can be viewed on the tours led by Simon Fenoulhet, Mererid Roberts and Stephen West. The exhibition will be opened by Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas.

GALERI. In January and February, CYWAITH CYMRU had an opportunity to present its work with an exhibition at Safle Celf in Galeri, Caernarfon. Artist's Maya Conran and Dyfrig Peris who were the Artists in Residence at Eisteddfod Eryri last year were given the opportunity to present a video they had worked on

ARTSTRUCTURE ON THE EISTEDDFOD FIELD
This will be the fourth commission by Cywaith Cymru of an artist built structure on the Eisteddfod field adjacent to the Visual Arts Pavilion. The structure must provide a stage for performance as well as being, itself a 'sculptural object'. This year artist Rawley Clay will undertake the task, and poet Catrin Dafydd will develop a performance piece in discussion with the artist. This event has become a successful and interesting collaboration between Cywaith Cymru and Academi.
