Wynn Gardens – attractive planted gardens with mature trees and shrubs and open grassy areas, in the village of Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay – now include a Sensory Garden, designed by Conwy County Borough Council’s Environmental Services Department and including a group of sculptures by the Battersea based London sculptor, Joss Smith.
The garden itself features raised flower beds, wide footpaths and a variety of scented plants – all complemented by Joss Smith’s sculptures which include:
an Entrance Archway carved and polished to a marble like finish from Moelfre limestone; a millstone shaped water feature with a fluted surface – reminding us of the importance of the Mill and pond in the development of Old Colwyn; a centre-piece tactile sculpture made of different coloured slate blocks from North West Wales’ slate quarries, and in its shape and form, reflecting the surrounding landscape and seascape; three carved ornamental and tactile panels incorporated into the garden wall, representing the spiral, the mountain and the clover leaf; an almost temple like Pregola, carved from solid oak with relief detail and three pieces of seating, each carved from single pieces of Welsh oak with recessed carving reflecting wave and sea forms. The garden was officially opened on Saturday, 31 July 2004 by the local MP Gareth Thomas and the local Assembly Member and Minister for Culture, Alun Pugh. The overall project was arranged by Conwy County Borough Council, in partnership with the Old Colwyn Environmental Federation and with funding from the Arts Council of Wales’ Lottery Fund. The sculptural element of the project was managed by Cywaith Cymru. Artworks Wales. |
