Ystradgynlais Underpass Residency
artist(s):
David Symons
location Ystradgynlais, Powys [south Wales]
completed December 2003
  A series of workshop sessions involving both primary and senior pupils working together were organised and led by the artist David Symons. They explored a variety of ideas and possibilities and then drew their preferred designs onto clear acetate sheets which they were able to roll into cylinders to recreate an impression of the underpass. Once the final design was selected the drawing was scaled up and transferred onto the corrugated steel walls of the tunnel itself. All the pupils participated in painting the design using hard wearing ‘Hammerite’ paint.
  Once completed the underpass and its environs became a brighter and more inviting area and engendered a sense of local pride and ownership.

The scheme has won two prestigious awards since it was completed. It was judged the Best Safety Improvement for Pedestrians in the UK for 2003 by
SUSTRANS, the sustainability transport charity and the Best in the
Community Project category in a competition organised by the ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL OF WALES
