Of all the three environmental improvement projects that gained Arts Council of Wales Lottery funding for Caerphilly County Borough Council it was probably the Library that provided the biggest challenge. The Council was undertaking the redesign of the public space in front of the library to incorporate new seating, paving, and planting but wanted an artist to enhance the backdrop which was the library’s north facing wall. To realise the full potential of the area as an attractive meeting point for pedestrians an imaginative treatment to the elevation was required.
Malcolm Robertson of Town Art Studios in Glenrothes, Scotland came up with a proposal to etch graphic alphabets on stainless steel tiles to create a striking facia mosaic. Two matching smaller steel mosaics were created as signage for the library.

The use of alphabet lettering in Welsh and English reaffirmed the use of the building as a library while other elements introduced the community to the lesser known alphabets of braille, morse code, finger spelling and semaphore. The whole piece is finished in brushed stainless steel giving a robust and highly decorative solution. |

Completed in 2001 the artwork can be seen adorning the outside walls of Ystrad Mynach Library in the High Street, Ystrad Mynach.
