Buster Simpson is an artist concerned with the environment and issues of sustainability, and water is often one of the major components in his work. In this exhibition, he made a detailed study of the rivers that flow into the Tywi to enrich this valley. His sculpture was made up of twenty common utility pails placed around the Mirror Pool, symbolising the major confluences entering the Tywi. Each pail was hand-painted by visitors to the Garden with the name of a river or brook entering the Tywi, and had a photographic ‘label’ illustrating plumbing pipes on the exterior of buildings where the ‘confluence’ of roof watershed, grey water and brown water join. Eight of the pails reflected inverted lettering in the Mirror Pool, displaying ‘AFON TYWI’. The precarious balancing act of the pails on the wall suggested the delicate balance between natural systems and mankind’s reliance on, and interventions in the ecosystem. The water running from each pail also created a contemplative sound piece.
