Rather than work with paint to create a mural that would be vulnerable to the elements, Rubin Eynon created three-dimensional relief panels in jesmonite resin, incorporating designs in stainless steel, copper, slate and ceramic mosaic.
The overall concept is futuristic, but also reflects the coastal environment. Rubin developed the individual designs, which are incorporated into the panels, from workshops with children from Llwyn yr Eos Primary School and the local Youth Club. Working with two different age groups, Rubin transposed the younger children’s drawings into three-dimensional circular panels, and the teenagers’ designs into stainless steel panels.
The panels were initially made in mdf, from which rubber moulds were made in order to cast them in resin. The children’s drawings were carved in clay, and again rubber moulds were made from these in order to cast them in resin. The result is a dynamic pattern of repeating forms, which lead you through the subway.
The subway mural was officially opened on 7th May 2003. |
