In June 2004 the Gorseinon Development Trust commissioned ceramic artist Kay Aplin to make artwork as part of their wider regeneration programme to improve the commercial centre and gateways into Gorseinon. One of the key areas identified in their strategy as a gateway to Gorseinon was the Penyrheol Comprehensive School site.

Landscape Architects White Consultants were appointed to enhance the area between the main road and the school and worked closely with Kay Aplin to integrate her work with their scheme.

In preparation to this project, consultation work was undertaken with year 8 pupils, which led to a questionnaire being produced and circulated throughout the whole school. Themes and ideas for artworks arose out of the consultation and questionnaires, such as nature, local flora and fauna, colour, and seating, wall artwork, and artwork on the fence.
Kay Aplin worked with school pupils throughout her design process. Beginning with drawing from life, then developing designs and patterns from those original drawings, and eventually working in clay, the pupils gained a valuable insight into the creative process of an artist. The resulting 3d and 2d ceramic artworks based on patterns of flowers and foliage are colourful, decorative and a valuable enhancement to the school grounds and gateway.

This project was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government through the auspices of the WDA and completed in March 2005.
