artist(s):
Tom Goddard
location Holyhead [north Wales]
host Isle of Anglesey County Council
completed May 2007
  Integral to the lead-in to the new development work, forming part of the consultation period, Tom Goddard was enlisted as artist-in-residence to work with the local community, engaging them on ideas and concepts for potential new artworks, and running activities and workshops with local people, schools and groups. Key also was the aim to generate information and feedback about the new Celtic Gateway.
  Tom worked from a town centre shop as a studio base, researching the local history and important figures, both past and present, and looking at the changing economic history of the town. He ran weekly sessions in schools creating a series of collaborative shadow puppet films, portraiture designs and ideas for a ‘Rogues Gallery’, and drawn, collaged fantasy images of a Holyhead of the future. He produced ideas for figurative installations for bus stops, and ways of highlighting street furniture, and a range of designs for waymarkers for access to the Ucheldre art centre and Maritime Museum. He also worked closely with local community regeneration groups, looking at ways of how to market Holyhead, creating designs for a town journey trail book, and for a series of playing cards. He gathered information and ideas from people dropping into the shop, both locals and visitors, building up a picture of Holyhead to try to help inspire a new sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings, to look at the town in a new light, and to invite people to engage in the town’s heritage, and also envisage its future. The residency culminated in an exhibition showing all the designs and ideas in the Ucheldre and also in the town studio shop.
  Tom’s extensive work, material and ideas have now been taken forward by Cywaith Cymru, in collaboration with artist David Mackie, to help develop a strategy for the town centre redevelopment being undertaken by Isle of Anglesey County Council.
